What the Vacationing Family Needs to Know
When preparing for a vacation it is important to protect yourself and your family before you leave town. What this means is that you take the time to talk with your children about safety precautions while you are away on vacation. There are some things that should be discussed about protecting your family before you go on vacation as well as putting some ground rules down for the vacation itself. Children should be reminded not to post on a Xanga site or inform strangers that they are going on vacation. Remind them not to tell construction workers who are working in the neighborhood that the family is going on vacation. Ask them not to mention to the school bus driver that no one is going to be at home. Remind the family that talking publicly about vacationing can be placing the family in a very vulnerable position. Burglaries occur when families are away on vacation and your family should not only be aware but should also be cautious. Discussions should be open about safety precautions while on vacation too. Ask your daughters to take precaution and to always use the buddy system before going out in a strange city. If you are going to large amusement parks, then it’s important to inform small children of what-if scenarios. Tell them where to go if they are lost in a crowd. Disney, MGM, Universal Studios and all major parks normally have some active safety policies in place and it’s not a bad idea to find out before you leave home what those policies are so that you can educate your children on what to expect when the unexpected happens. Explain to all children of the home how important it is to keep hotel room doors securely fastened and to always lock any windows and balcony doors as well. Even if you stay at a Marriott or Hilton, crimes can happen and if you choose to educate your family on safety precautions, many would-be crimes can be avoided. Families vacationing together can have a safe and very enjoyable holiday away if they plan to have fun in safe environments. As the vacation planner, you should choose locations where you know the area is considered to be safe and in doing so, you should make sure that the family knows how to practice safety at all times.
